The Faculty of Earth Science and Technology, Halu Oleo University (UHO) is the first faculty in Southeast Sulawesi Province that is oriented towards the management and development of earth resources. As one of the regions that has a lot of natural resources potential, Southeast Sulawesi Province is required to have human resources who can manage the potential of the region properly

The forerunner to the establishment of the Faculty of Earth Science and Technology was began with the formation of an earth science concentration under the Department of Physics, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences. The opening of this concentration was intended to prepare for the establishment of the department that would yield experts in earth sciences, especially in the mining sector which is the mainstay of the Southeast Sulawesi region’s potential. On March 28, 2011, the Governor of Southeast Sulawesi gave recommendation of No. 421.4/1084 regarding the establishment of the Geophysics, Geology, Geography, Mining Engineering, and Socio-Economic Mine Management Program at UHO which would lead to the establishment of the Faculty of Earth Science and Technology.

On July 18, 2013, the Director General of Higher Education, Ministry of Education and Culture of the Republic of Indonesia issued a Letter of Assignment (mandate) Number: 677/E.E2/DT/2013. This assignment letter was followed up with an operational permit for the implementation of the departments which was stipulated through the Decree of the Minister of Education and Culture of the Republic of Indonesia Number 865a/UN29/PP/2013 dated July 23, 2013 concerning the Determination of the Implementation of Mandate Departments at Halu Oleo University. Such departments were Department of Geophysical Engineering, Department of Geological Engineering, Department of Geography and Department of Mining Engineering.

Initially, these four departments were under the auspices of the Department of Physics, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA) Halu Oleo University (UHO) because the driving force behind the establishment of the departments came from lecturers in the Department of Physics who had specific expertise in earth sciences. However, along with the development of the departments and increasing interest in applicants, based on the Decree of the Rector of UHO No. 2145a/SK/UN29/PP/2014 the management of the four departments is optimized by establishing a separate faculty, namely the Faculty of Earth Science and Technology, hereinafter abbreviated as FEST.
